Five useful ingredient roles — in normal language
Think of these as jobs inside a formula, not a scorecard of good and bad ingredients.
Humectants
Help attract and hold water in the outer layers of skin. Glycerin is a familiar example.
Emollients
Help skin feel smoother and softer. Plant oils and butters can play this role.
Surfactants
Help water lift away oil, sunscreen, sweat and daily buildup in cleansers.
